A longer prison term as a way of punishing those who break the law is not as good as other methods. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

练习

Nowadays, there are many law-breakers sentenced with a longer term of prison than before. Although it can terrify the public, i believe it can lead to many problems.

One disadvantage is that a long period of prison term may make people isolated from the society. When someone is caged into prison, they will be asked to handle much labor work and little time is left to learn skills or gain knowledge like before. Providing this situation maintains for a long period, these people may lose the ability to earn as much money as before and can not raise the whole family when they return to the society. The consequence is that they will have no choice but to commit a crime again.

The cost of building prison cells is another drawback. A longer prison term means that there will be more people need to be caged at the same time and original prisons will probably be too small to contain such a large number of prisoners. The government, thus, has to take action to expand the area of prisons, which definitely need a large amount of money to spend. However, these money should have been used to some more significant industries, like schools, hospitals, parks and so on.

On the other hand, a stricter punishment may perform better in the aspect of governing the society, because many people who have a tendency to break the law will be terrified by it. Before doing some immoral things, they may need to think twice. When they find the result of being arrested is too heavy to bear, they will probably give it up. Thanks to it, the whole society must become happier and safer.

To be concluded, while some crime may be urged, a heavy punishment can have many negative effects to the whole society.

Nowadays, many lawbreakers are sentenced to longer prison terms than in the past. Although it can scare the public, I think it can lead to many problems.

One disadvantage is that a long prison sentence can isolate people from society. When someone is locked up in prison, they are expected to do a lot of work and there is little time left to learn skills or gain knowledge as before. If this situation continues for a long time, these people may not be able to earn as much money as before and may not be able to support the whole family when they return to society. As a result, they will have no choice but to become criminals again.

In conclusion, while some crimes may be encouraged, severe punishment can have many negative effects on the whole society.
